Autodidacticism:
The act of self-directed learning about a subject or subjects in which one has little to no formal education.
In my opinion there is no better way: no external pressure, no class schedule, and no assignment deadlines. Just you and your learning at your pace. In fact Do It Yourself (DIY) is the best way to described most of my own permaculture education. It was only after obsessively consuming several books on the subject that I took the next step attending a formal course. Even then, the self-directed pre-training I had undergone proved to be the best of foundations. After finishing my formal training the DIY learning just kept rolling and hasn't stopped. The permaculture theory from classroom study guided and directed my experience with the real world. Learning as it should be.
The DIY package of Pacific Permaculture's Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) curriculum is as flexible as it gets. All key concepts are delivered in 30 - 45 min video segments. They are neatly organized and easy to access. Watch the lectures when you want, where you want, as many times as you want, complete exercises and assignments when you're ready. Take in the ideas, think about the ideas, go onto the student forum and share the ideas with other students and myself. Try the ideas in your backyard, on your patio, in a friend's yard, and tell us about your results. From assessing your climate, landscape and resources base to the fundamentals of soil biology its all here.
I promise that the DIY package will provided you with everything you are looking for in a self directed online permaculture course and more.
Sincerely
Jesse Lemieux, BSc. PDC
